Every year upon the conclusion of certification the Heart of America Police Dog Association sponsors a “stress relief” event known as the Trophy Run. After a week of unbelievable pressure during the certification process handlers and their canine partners need to relax and just have fun. Three competitions were developed that fit the bill. A detector dog trophy dash, a patrol dog event and a tough dog event all took place at the end of certification. Below you will find facts about the event and the results of the 2007 Trophy Run.
PATROL DOG
In the patrol dog trophy dash canine teams are judged on the handlers ability to control and direct their canine partner as well as the abilities of the canine. Events include dual agitators, where the handler sends the canine on an apprehension and must call them off of that and send the canine to apprehend another agitator. The teams are also judged on how well the dog works in muzzled apprehensions.

DETECTOR DOG
In the detector dog event, canine teams were given 5 minutes to locate 5 finds (narcotics or flammable liquids) in a house. This is an all out mad dash to locate the items and inform the judge of the location. Trophies were presented to the top five finishers.

TOUGH DOG
The tough dog event is one that some say is “all canine”. This event allows the canines to show their heart. Each of the events test the dog for qualities desired in a law enforcement canine as well as the “toughness” of the dog. Events include a gauntlet in which the canine has to apprehend a “suspect” which is positioned beyond a field of distractions. These distractions include tennis balls, bite suits and during the run articles are thrown in front of the canine. The event is capped off with a water apprehension in which the canine must enter the water and swim to get the apprehension.
